Cheese prices have doubled as supermarkets ramp up shopping bills in a new blow to hard-pressed families, reports Stephen Hayward from the Mirror.

Reports suggest shoppers are paying £6 a week more for groceries after food prices soared 7 per cent in a month – just as millions are hit by record winter fuel bills. Cathedral City mature cheddar has jumped from £1.94 to £3.88 for 400g while Philadelphia has gone up from 91p to £1.82 for 300g. Prices of breakfast cereals have also rocketed – up by a quarter – and tinned tomato soup is up 11 per cent.

The findings come from mySupermarket.co.uk, which tracks Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and online retailer Ocado. It found the cost of a typical basket of 52 items had risen from £86.63 to £92.64. The increase, the biggest since the peak of the recession in 2008, is double inflation, which is now 3.5 per cent, and comes at a time when many are struggling with redundancy or pay freezes.

One reason for the price hikes is the end of the Christmas and New Year supermarket price war.

MySupermarket’s Jonny Steel said: “January was an extremely competitive month for supermarkets, with special offers at an all-time high.”

Dairy products have been particularly affected because of jumps in the cost of ingredients.

The stores also staggered VAT rises on items such as alcohol and biscuits so they did not hit customers too hard at the start of January.

The great thing about ASDA Online Shopping is the convenience it offers. As more of us work longer hours, it’s becoming harder to spend time with family and friends, or simply unwind at the end of a hard day.

Shopping online with ASDA.com not only saves you time that could be better spent doing the things you love, but also saves you money thanks to great low ASDA prices.

You can even book your delivery up to three weeks in advance and still add items to your basket right up until 5pm the day before your delivery is due.

So, why not start shopping online today and enjoy fresh groceries that have been handpicked, bagged and delivered direct to your door, with not a queue in sight?

Order online then just sit back and relax, while ASDA delivers. It couldn’t be easier.

Providing a safe grocery delivery. The following information sets out Sainsburys current delivery guidelines.

Sainsburys will always deliver your order to the front door of your house or to the communal entrance to your block of flats.

The drivers may not be able to deliver to you if he or she has to transport your shopping an unreasonable distance because of parking or access restrictions.

Drivers will not always be able to deliver beyond the communal entrance if there isn’t a lift, which transports the shopping beyond the first floor of the building (where the ground level is 0). If this is the case, the driver or a store colleague will discuss delivery options with you for subsequent deliveries.

Sainsbury’s always aim to help our customers who need further assistance, where our drivers believe it is safe or practical to do so.

Please note that our service does not extend to unpacking your shopping from its bags.

For deliveries to customers at a business address, sainsburys are only able to deliver to the ground floor communal entrance of your business, but are unfortunately not able to come up to your desk or place of work. If your business has a shared ground floor reception, this is the point to which they will deliver.

Please ensure you are available to receive and sign for the order within your timeslot. Their drivers will wait a reasonable amount of time for you to arrive at the ground floor reception to collect your order but if you do not arrive, they may need to leave without delivering your order. While Sainsburys may be able to organise a redelivery for a subsequent time, they may need to charge for this redelivery.

22 September, 2009

IGD Retail Analysis reports:

Market share data for the UK Grocery market from TNS has shown a slight slow-down over the past month, with the market growing by 5.2% in the 12 weeks to 6 September 2009. According to the market research agency, “recession panic” is beginning to leave the mindset of both consumer and retailer alike, with Waitrose proving to be the key beneficiary – growing by 11.2% compared with the previous year, aided by the performance of its ‘essentials’ range, and the acquisition of a number of Co-operative/Somerfield sites.

Ed Garner, Director at TNS Worlpanel, signalled a cautionary note – despite the solid performance from the grocery industry: “This is not to imply that all sectors of the High Street will instantly return to pre-recession growth. Rather that food remains a manageable proportion of most household budgets bys historical standards.

“It is worth noting that there is challenge to the sector coming from the falling grocery inflation rate – this will restrict value growth for the industry going forward.”

Founded in 1869 Sainsbury’s is now the 3rd largest supermarket in the UK (according to the Taylor Nelson Sofres rankings published in January 2008), with a market share of 16.4% compared to Tesco’s 31.5%, ASDA’s 16.7% and Morrison’s 11.4%.

With an emphasis on a higher quality grocery offering compared to its other large rivals, Sainsbury’s currently operates 785 hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores. It also operates Sainsbury’s Bank, which sells financial services, and is a joint venture with HBOS; Sainsbury’s Online internet shopping services; and has a property portfolio worth £8.6 billion (as of March 2007).

According to CACI, as of 2006, Sainsbury’s has market dominance in 8 postcode areas; TQ (Torquay), SN (Swindon), GU (Guildford), RH (Redhill), DA (Dartford), SE (South East London), EN (Enfield) and WV (Wolverhampton).
It is particularly strong in London and the South-East, where it is based, and although it has a national store portfolio, it is biased towards the South-East.

Sainsbury’s operates an internet shopping service branded as “Sainsbury’s Online”. To use this service customers choose their grocery items online. Pickers then collect the required items which are delivered to customers from a local store by van. This is available to about 75% of the UK population. The service is run from larger stores which carry the full product range – over 100 stores operate an Online service.

It was previously called ‘Sainsbury’s to You’ and ‘Sainsbury’s entertain You’, and prior to that it was called ‘Sainsbury’s Orderline’.

Sainsbury’s staff will now deliver your groceries to your door, however prior to September 2007, and as was common with other UK supermarkets with an online shopping and delivery service such as Tesco or Ocado, Sainsbury’s Online delivery staff would carry items direct to customers’ kitchens.

Hunting around for different grocery offers today got me thinking: what’s the difference between Ocado and Waitrose Deliver?

Katy from Waitrose Customer Services explains “The Waitrose Deliver service is only available in 94 Waitrose branches at present, however do have plans to roll out more branches and will promote this in the relevant branches near the time of launch. Customers wishing to check if we deliver in their area can enter their postcode on our website www.waitrosedeliver.com

Ocado supply Waitrose products online and their website is www.ocado.com Although the assortments differ, both of the services offer the same quality produce you would expect from a Waitrose branch and the same quality of customer care.

The full post can be found here: http://www.waitrose.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=1108

Marie, website editor for Waitrose.com explains: “WaitroseDeliver and Ocado are part of a range of services designed to make shopping at Waitrose even easier. You can order online and choose groceries direct from your local store, or choose from the selection available from our partner Ocado.

With WaitroseDeliver, order your groceries online and you’ll find the same choice of products as you’ll find in your local store. Choose from our award winning fresh food service counters including fish, meat and delicatessen. Your personal shopper will then pick and pack your order in your local store ready for delivery direct to your door. With Ocado you can choose from a wide range of Waitrose products with their easy to use website. Your order will be picked and packed by the Ocado team and delivered to your door at a time to suit you.

With WaitroseDeliver you can leave your personal shopper a note, to tell them how you want them to shop for you. Our service counters allow you to select exactly the amount you need by ordering by the kilo and you can also order other fresh items such as loose bread, fresh flowers plus party and celebration food from WaitroseEntertaining, our flexible food ordering service.

With WaitroseDeliver you’ll find all the same prices and money saving offers that you’ll find in your local store. Ocado prices are similar to Waitrose. There may also be different offers on certain items.” The full post can be found here: http://www.waitrose.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=323

So in a nutshell:

You order your shopping online with both WaitroseDeliver and Ocado

WaitroseDeliver items are picked and packed for you by a member of your local Waitrose store and then delivered to your door. Customers recieve the benefit of instore promotions and pricing. Similarly Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s largely operate a pick-in-store model.

Ocado items are picked and packed for you by an Ocado team member in a warehouse and then delivered to your door. Customers recieve the benefit of Ocado promotions and pricing. Many people think Waitrose fully owns Ocado, however it only has a minority stake and a distant one at that. As a result Ocado can charge its customers exactly what it wants under competition law.(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/5136317/Ocado-undercuts-Waitrose-starting-an-online-supermarket-price-war.html)

Waitrose is owned by the John Lewis Partnership. 29% of Ocado is owned by the John Lewis Pension Fund.

Products, prices and promotions may differ between the Ocado Warehouse and the local Waitrose store.

Ocado employs more than 3,000 staff and processes on average 12,000 orders a day, offering almost 16,000 lines. It has about 150,000 active users of its service.

* Each week we compare and price match branded goods with Tesco. Price match applies to standard retail price of identical products only and excludes temporary promotions. Please see our Terms & Conditions for full details.
** An ‘Internet-only Price’ applies only to Waitrose own-label products, and means that the price of that item is lower than the retail price of the identical item sold in Waitrose shops which provide the Waitrose Deliver service, including items on promotion (but excluding temporary, end-of-life in-store markdowns). Catchweight items, which are items that are charged per unit of weight and have their price printed on them (such as certain meats and deli items) are also excluded. We check prices daily but there could be up to a one day delay between prices being checked and them appearing on our website. Delivery charges, which range from being free to £6.49 depending on which delivery slot is selected, apply as normal. Please see Terms & Conditions at Ocado.com for full details.

Steps to grocery shopping with ASDA on line:

To select products directly from the store, click on ‘The Store’ button and decide where you want to go to on the panel on the left of the screen by:

First, choosing an aisle (e.g. ‘Fruit and Vegetables’)

Second, choosing a section (e.g. ‘Apples and Pears’)

Third, choosing a shelf (e.g. ‘Apples’)

You will be shown all the products currently available on the shelf.

To add an item to your trolley from a shelf, click the ‘add’ button. The product will automatically appear in your shopping trolley on the right of the screen.

Search
If you know exactly what you’re looking for and can’t find an item, go to the search box and just type in the name of the product or the type of food, eg. tomato soup, apples etc.

My Favourites
ASDA have several ways to help make your online shopping experience even quicker, after you’ve completed your first order. These can be found by clicking the ‘My Favourites’ tab.

Previous orders
This lists all the items you’ve bought on your last three visits to our online store. Simply add items to your basket one-at-a-time by clicking the ‘add’ button next to each item.

ASDA, the UK’s second largest supermarket, offers a wide range of products and services including: Groceries, Mobile Phones, CDs, DVDs, Games, Electricals, Contact Lenses, Flowers, ASDA Finance

Shopping Lists
To help make your online shopping for asdagroceries even easier in the future, you can create personal shopping lists that contain the items you buy on a regular basis. For example, you could create a shopping list for a weekly/monthly shop, or a list for the kids’ birthday parties, cleaning essentials and so on. It’s like creating a personal shelf just for you, containing your favourite items. It means you’ll be able to find these items and add them to your trolley very quickly, every time you shop!

You can either create a new shopping list by selecting products from the aisles and shelves, or from the shopping trolley.

While browsing the shelves, simply select the items you want to add to your list by ticking the box next to the item, then click the ‘Add to list’ button. You can then choose to create a new list, or add the item to an existing list that you have already created. If you decide to create a new list, you’ll need to enter a name and a description for the list e.g. Kids’ party … All the things I need to throw a great birthday party.

You can also add the entire contents of your trolley to a new or existing shopping list by clicking the ‘Add to list’ button at the bottom of your trolley.

Each shopping list can contain a maximum of 100 products, and you can create up to 10 shopping lists.

Quick Start Shopping
After you’ve registered, you can enter a few details from an ASDA till receipt. The day after, the products from your receipt will be stored in your Favourites list. Not all the products from our stores are available from this site, but ASDA are adding to our online range all the time.

Changing quantities
To change the quantity of a product, click the ‘+’ or ‘-’ symbols next to the quantity box, or just type the new quantity straight into the quantity box.

If you want to delete an item in your Shopping Trolley, click the ‘x’ button next to the item or use the ‘-’ symbol to reduce the quantity to zero.
